Tax Hike for Seminole County Schools May Lead to Higher Rents in Orlando

Friday, October 12th, 2012

A million dollar hike in property taxes was recently proposed for Seminole County Public Schools to help the district pull out of its financial hardship and preserve the quality of Seminole’s high-performing schools. The added tax amounts to $1 for each $1,000 of taxable value of property and will be up for voter referendum in the November 6th general election.

Current Seminole County figures demonstrate that the school taxes are split evenly between homeowners and businesses. Proposers of the tax hike are claiming the increase would only cost Orlando homeowners roughly 30 cents per day, which is a number based on the average home value in Seminole County. However, opponents of the hike say that this claim is misleading because businesses will also have to pay for half of the cost of the increase.

Opponents of the proposed tax hike say that the increase may be more than some property owners and small businesses can afford. Many are estimating that people who rent properties in Seminole County (such as apartments, single family homes, and businesses) can expect their rent to go up to cover the added tax.

SeaWorld Adds New Technologies with TurtleTrek

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

SeaWorld Orlando has just unveiled a new attraction in a format not yet seen anywhere else in the world. This attraction, adequately named TurtleTrek, will include a 3-D computer-generated film projected on the inside of a massive dome, thus giving visitors a 360-degree view of a virtual undersea environment.

In the movie, computer-generated elements such as a shark, a fishing boat with nets, and a threatening bird swarm above and around theme park guests, who stand on a round platform during the seven-minute show.

TurtleTrek is SeaWorld’s attempt at breaking away from the current stereotype of only showcasing organic attractions such as animals and other living things. SeaWorld Orlando also hopes that this attraction will help them break into the realm of technology, thus attracting a new audience. Interestingly, this technology is so new that SeaWorld San Diego did not have the chance to incorporate it when it opened a turtle-themed attraction last year.

SeaWorld Orlando will follow up the new TurtleTrek attraction with Antarctica, a new area of the park that will include a ride it advertises as “a first-of-its-kind family adventure ride that utilizes new technology for an experience that can change from visit to visit.”

If you are interested in visiting this great new attraction, be sure to visit the SeaWorld Orlando website. The Exciting World of La Nouba

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

In 1998, Cirque du Soleil, in a partnership with Disney’s former CEO Michael Eisner, built its first permanent freestanding theater in Downtown Disney in Orlando, Florida. It is in this Orlando theater that La Nouba is performed practically every night of the week. Enter the attic of make-believe, where the mundane meets the marvelous.

La Nouba is an unforgettable journey into a world that is threatening and exhilarating, frightening and familiar. This show is a metaphor for the meeting of two worlds completely opposite of one another: the fantastic world of the circus artists (the Cirques) who sport bright, fluorescent colors, and that of the Urbains (urbanities), who wear dark, monochromatic outfits. When these two worlds make contact, the magic and awe-inspiring feats of one set fire to the pale mundanity of the other.

Florida Today raves: “Dazzling costumes, dramatic lighting, bizarre choreography, and music sets the stage for clownish observes, a human puppet, Rene Magritte-inspired scenery, and a host of amazing acrobatic acts.”

Performances of La Nouba are held Tuesday through Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. There are no performances on Sundays and Mondays, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance. For more information and ticket prices, be sure to check out the official Cirque du Soleil: La Nouba webite.

Soar the Skies with the Thrilling Skycoaster!

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Are you looking to get out of your new Orlando rental home and explore the various attractions around the area? Are you a thrill seeker? If you’ve answered yes to the above questions, seek no further: the Skycoaster at Fun Spot, Orlando may be your perfect match.

Skycoaster is an amusement park ride produced and managed by Skycoaster, Inc. On the ride, riders in groups of one to three are winched to the top of a launch tower and then dropped towards the ground, swinging from a cable tether back and forth until brought to rest. Skycoasters can range in height, but the Skycoaster at Fun Spot, Orlando is the tallest in the world at 300 feet and can achieve speeds of 85 miles-per-hour. The actual ride only lasts about a minute and a half, but expect it to be the most exciting minute and a half you’ve ever spent screaming until your throat is hoarse.

If safety is an issue for you, don’t worry! The flight cables used are made of galvanized steel, which can support over 9,000 pounds. The three-ring release system is the same kind used on parachutes, and the flight suits worn are incredibly similar to hang-gliding suits, and are made by a parachute company to support the weight of up to 10,000 pounds.

So if you’re looking to feel the thrills of skydiving and hang gliding in one action-packed ride, check out the Skycoaster at Fun Spot in Orlando. Prices may vary, so be sure to check out the Fun Spot website before visiting.
